Mayor takes swans under his wing

Did you know that Maidstone is the only borough in the country where the swans belong to the Mayor rather than the Queen?

Assisted by members of the Hampstead and Yalding Cruising Club, the Mayor of Maidstone, Cllr David Naghi, was joined by Cllr Michelle Hastie for the annual Swan-Upping river cruise in June.

The Mayor was flanked by a flotilla of local vessels as they proceeded up river to count the swans along the Medway. The Maidstone Sea Cadets were also present, piping him aboard the Mayoral boat. The day also saw the appointment of the new Swan Master, Mark Brattle, Head Falconer at Leeds Castle.

The river cruise was organised by Past President of the HYCC, Bob Tuthill, and marked his 40th year in this role. This year’s Cruise commemorated the 50th Anniversary of the event in its current format – the Mayor presented a special cake marking the 50th Anniversary to Hampstead and Yalding Cruising Club.
