Hello to all HYCC Members

Mark SmurthwaiteI am Mark Smurthwaite and have very recently been elected as the Acting Commodore of the HYCC.

For those who don't know me I have a boat called 'Lorena Joy' moored at Little Venice. I live with the love of my life Lorraine in Boughton Monchelsea, and am a Maidstone man born and bred. in my childhood I would spend many hours down by the river at Allington and always said that one day I would have my own boat on this beautiful River, And do feel very lucky to be able to fulfil that lifelong dream.

I have had a boat since I was about 12 when my father bought our first canoe, an old canvas one that I had many hours using on the river. When I was in my early 20's I bought my first of many speed boats and then spent many years water-skiing. And would think nothing of going to Windermere for the weekend. About 15 years ago I bought my first cabin cruiser on the Medway at Twyford bridge, a 14ft Mayland, since those days I have upgraded when able to the Fairline Carrera we currently own and adore. Although work and family often limit our opportunity to get out on the Boat, we can still be seen on the Medway most weekends, and thoroughly enjoy taking our friends and family out.

With my many years of boating I have taken the following RYA courses, Power Boating Level 1, Personal Watercraft, and Day skipper. I have been a member of HYCC for 3 years and believe that the club has a lot to offer fellow boaters, in knowledge and experience, together with the events organized throughout the year. Some months ago I developed a Facebook page for Boaters to be able to communicate various information to each other. Following the floods over Christmas I thought that this was needed and I have been amazed by the response for the boating community, and the posts are now hitting thousands of people, just search Facebook for River Medway Boaters or use the link below.

As a result of this I have been asked to represent the interests of the Boaters on the MRUA and I am getting very regular communication from the Environment Agency about what they are doing on the river, something severely lacking in recent years, and I believe to be a very positive step forward.

As the Acting Commodore I aim to develop the club, initially by getting the feedback from you the members with a view to understanding what you would like to see the club do, in terms of events and communication. I understand this needs to be a two way system so I welcome your feed back and I can be contacted on any of the following:
