SING OUT AND STAND UP TO CANCER

Date Posted: 12-05-2015

Fresh from their appearance in the Community Channel’s ‘Brilliant England – Brilliant Britain’ series the members of Bolton Cancer Voices are urging other cancer patients and cancer survivors to join them.

Founded in June 2012 Bolton Cancer Voices is the North West’s only dedicated community Choir for cancer patients and cancer survivors. Open to anyone who has received a cancer diagnosis of any type, at any time, the Choir accepts people from all areas as long as they can get to Bolton for rehearsals, which take place on Monday evenings – 7.30pm-9pm.

Amongst a current membership of 40+ are the newly initiated who had never previously sung in a Choir, let alone performed in public before joining and members who have come with a wealth of previous choral experience.

Under the expert baton of Musical Director Mr Clive Rushworth, learning is made easy and enjoyable; people just need enthusiasm, a willingness to learn and the desire to have fun!

Though cancer brings this Choir together it is not allowed to define or restrict the activities they undertake and in all respects they would consider themselves a Choir like any other with many goals, dreams and aspirations to fulfil.

For Barbara Rogers, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, it’s worth the weekly commute from Chorley just to sing with this unique Choir. Barbara says:

‘Singing itself is good on many counts but to do it within a group of people determined to get on and enjoy it whatever their story, is a very positive experience.’

Over the summer the Choir will be performing at the Midnight Memories Walk in aid of Bolton Hospice and at Haigh Show in August.
