MEMBERS SOUGHT FOR NORTH WEST’S ONLY CANCER CHOIR

Bolton Cancer Voices is in the process of holding a full-scale recruitment drive for new members in a move to double its size over the coming weeks in preparation for an exciting announcement next month. Word of the only known Choir in the north-west for cancer patients and cancer survivors is spreading and though Bolton-based the Choir now has members from surrounding areas such as Bury and Radcliffe and even as far-afield as the Peak District.

Formed just over a year ago membership is open to cancer patients and cancer survivors at any point in their cancer journey whether newly diagnosed, in treatment, living with cancer as a life-limiting condition or a cancer survivor – regardless of the period of time that has elapsed since treatment. The Choir aims to provide a positive, motivational and diversionary environment in which members can have fun, enjoy the challenges and exhilaration of performing and have a focus aside from their illness; it also offers an informal forum to meet with others in a similar situation and benefit from mutual support and understanding.

The Choir works under the baton of a very experienced and popular Musical Director – Clive Rushworth, whose relaxed approach to rehearsals makes learning easy and enjoyable no matter what people’s level of ability. Previous singing experience is not required, you don’t need to be able to read music, there are no auditions to worry about and no membership fees; people just need enthusiasm, a willingness to learn and the flexibility to travel to Bolton for rehearsals.

Karen Elliott Chair of Bolton Cancer Voices said:

‘When I initially muted the idea of starting a Choir for cancer patients and cancer survivors there were those who couldn’t see how this could possibly work but within the first hour of our inaugural rehearsal I knew we were on to a winner and during this first year together we have gone from strength to strength; it’s been a real hit with the members and we want others to put aside their inhibitions, take up the challenge and come along and join us. I think people may be amazed at just how much joy and laughter there is to be had with Bolton Cancer Voices.’

Rehearsals take place on Monday evenings 7.30pm – 9pm at the Friend’s Meeting House, Silverwell Street, Bolton; anyone interested should contact Karen on 01204 595562 / 07773 164235.
